Beautiful Distress was founded on the concept that there is a great deal of mental suffering, that not enough people are aware of this and that not enough is done to stop it.

The Foundation uses art in an attempt to open up the world of psychiatry and battle the stigma attached to it.

Why art? Beautiful Distress believes that art is pre-eminently capable of articulating and depicting the human condition

Kunst: voor verbinding en tegen stigma - [Deviant]

‘Laten we in de psychiatrie minder evidence based en meer intuition based werken. Kijken naar kunst kan daarbij helpen’. Dat was een van de ‘berichten aan de geestelijke gezondheidzorg’ die psychiater Jim van Os op 7 december gaf. Hij deed dat aan het eind van een symposium dat onderdeel was van Beautiful Distress, een Kunstmanifestatie over Waanzin die tot 14 januari in Amsterdam gehouden wordt. Hier is werk te zien van kunstenaars die zich laten inspireren door waanzin, psychisch lijden en de wereld van de psychiatrie. Werk dat begrip kweekt en helpt om vooroordelen te bestrijden.
