Relation to Beautiful Distress - Kira Alker and Elke Luyten were part of an artist in residence program at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn from July 2019 until September 2019. The program is an initiative of Beautiful Distress.
About the artists - Alker is from San Francisco and holds a BA in Theatre from Pomona College and an MA in Performance Studies from New York University. Luyten is originally from Belgium where she earned a teaching degree; she later moved to France and then the United States to pursue studies in movement-based theatre.
They have been creating collaborative movement performances since 2003 under the name Zus Performance. In 2015, they created the choreography for David Bowie’s short film “Blackstar”. Luyten also danced in “Blackstar” and subsequently performed in Bowie’s final music video “Lazarus”. In their own words they describe their work as follows: “Through performance, we seek transformative experiences that are built, codified and rehearsed through a deep investigation of presence and intentionality. We work to unearth and expose a dancer’s relationship to movement, studying their participation in the doing as a foundation for the creation of choreographic material.”
During their time at Kings County they were studying expressions of mental illness in movement and considering the impact on choreography. They developed a new choreographic practice based on the idea of formlessness. Through working with the residents they witnessed the power of imagination, emotional openness and the necessity for the community support in our collective mental health. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 the 12-month residency was cut short.

Over de kunstenaars - Alker komt uit San Francisco en heeft een BA in Theater van Pomona College en een MA in Performance Studies van New York University. Luyten komt oorspronkelijk uit België waar ze een lerarendiploma behaalde; later verhuisde ze naar Frankrijk en vervolgens naar de Verenigde Staten om zich te verdiepen in bewegingstheater.
Sinds 2003 maken ze samen bewegingsvoorstellingen onder de naam Zus Performance. In 2015 creëerden ze de choreografie voor David Bowie's kortfilm "Blackstar". Luyten danste ook in "Blackstar" en trad vervolgens op in Bowie's laatste muziekvideo "Lazarus".
In hun eigen woorden omschrijven ze hun werk als volgt: "Door middel van performance zoeken we naar transformatieve ervaringen die worden opgebouwd, gecodificeerd en gerepeteerd door een diepgaand onderzoek naar aanwezigheid en intentionaliteit. We werken aan het blootleggen van de relatie tussen danser en beweging, waarbij we hun deelname aan het doen bestuderen als basis voor de creatie van choreografisch materiaal."
Tijdens hun verblijf in Kings County bestudeerden ze uitingen van mentale kwetsbaarheden in beweging en dachten na over de impact ervan op choreografie. Ze ontwikkelden een nieuwe choreografische praktijk gebaseerd op het idee van vormloosheid. Door met de bewoners te werken waren ze getuige van de kracht van verbeelding, emotionele openheid en de noodzaak van steun van de gemeenschap in onze collectieve geestelijke gezondheid. Helaas werd door COVID-19 de 12 maanden durende residentie ingekort.
