Relation to Beautiful Distress - Holt exhibited her project Neuroblooms at Beautiful Distress and Mentrum Mental Health Clinic in Amsterdam between July 19th and August 22nd 2021. Neuro Blooms is an exhibit of work from Leslie Holt’s Brain Stain and Unspeakable series and addresses contemporary and historical views of mental health conditions and treatments. The exhibit also includes large Neuro Blooms graphics covering the windows of Mentrum Mental Health Clinic in Amsterdam.
About the artist - Holt is a US artist living in Hyattsville, MD. She is Co-director of Red Dirt Studio, a warehouse artist studio in Mt. Rainier, MD and also teaches art to adults with mental health conditions and developmental disabilities in communities around Washington, DC. Holt exhibits her work widely and is represented by David Lusk Gallery in Memphis, TN.

Leslie Holt’s project, Neuro Blooms, harnesses the power of art to make mental health conditions visible and beautiful. Neuro Blooms imagery is based on PET scans of people with mental health conditions which reveal unique maps of brain activity and function. Holt’s work probes the visual beauty of PET scans, as well as their power to convey the brain’s role in mental illness. As a series within a body of work exploring mental illness and our beautiful brains, this work is rooted in Holt’s experience with depression as well as her mother’s struggle with bipolar disorder. Neuro Blooms imagery has catalyzed partnerships with organizations in the US and UK to help shape creative mental health campaigns.

Neuroblooms is een expositie van werk uit Leslie Holt's Brain Stain en Unspeakable series en gaat in op hedendaagse en historische opvattingen over geestelijke gezondheidsaandoeningen en behandelingen. De tentoonstelling omvatte ook grote Neuro Blooms afbeeldingen die de ramen van Mentrum Mental Health Clinic in Amsterdam bedekten.
Over de kunstenaar - Holt is een Amerikaanse kunstenaar die woont in Hyattsville, MD. Ze is mede-directeur van Red Dirt Studio, een kunstenaarsatelier in Mt. Leslie Holt's project, Neuro Blooms, gebruikt de kracht van kunst om geestelijke gezondheidsproblemen zichtbaar en iets moois te maken. Het beeldmateriaal van Neuro Blooms is gebaseerd op PET-scans van mensen met psychische aandoeningen, die unieke kaarten van hersenactiviteit en -functie laten zien. Holts werk onderzoekt de visuele schoonheid van PET-scans, maar ook hun vermogen om de rol van de hersenen bij psychische aandoeningen te verduidelijken. Als een serie binnen een oeuvre dat geestesziekten en onze prachtige hersenen onderzoekt, is dit werk geworteld in Holts ervaring met depressie en in de strijd van haar moeder met een bipolaire stoornis. Neuro Blooms beeldmateriaal heeft samenwerkingsverbanden tot stand gebracht met organisaties in de VS en het VK om creatieve campagnes voor geestelijke gezondheid te helpen vormgeven.
